CJA India _ Hunger debate

CJA India

“India has over 10,000 daily newspapers and 70,000 journals published in 20 languages. There are some 800 TV channels, half of them news stations, many of which broadcast 24X7 in several languages.

“According to Robin Jeffrey, renowned Australian expert on media, the India media promises impressive growth for the next 15 years before reaching a plateau.

“The growth is however uneven. There are complaints of violence against journalists in Jammu and Kashmir and in the North-eastern region, both of which have witnessed long years of militancy. Media is targeted by both the government and the militants.

“Reporters Without Borders ranks  India 131st  in the 2012 press freedom index while Freedom House puts India in the “partly free” category in the Intranet freedom rankings. Both report increasing trend in India in web monitoring and censorship by authorities.”
