Hafizabad, Punjab – Unknown armed persons shot dead Yaqoob Shehzad, Chairman of the Press Club Hafizabad on Sunday,October 5, 2014. He was father of four children and associated with the private TV Channel Express News.
According to an initial report, unknown attackers shot Yaqoob Shehzad while he was sitting in the office of his friend situated at Saghar road. Eyewitnesses informed that gunmen arrived at the office and opened indiscriminate firing, which claimed his life. Reportedly Shehzad was shot in the head three times.
Police have registered the case and started investigations. The Punjab Chief Minister has ordered the arrest of all assailants without any delay.
According to earlier reports, Nadeem Hyder , a correspondent for the daily Dunya, was shot dead by two unknown assailants in the Kaliki Mandi area of Hafizabad on Friday, October 3. The killers fled from the scene. Local police have registered the case and begun an investigation.
According to RMNP monitoring, nine journalists and five media workers lost their lives up 5th October 2014. President RMNP Ehsan Ahmed Sehar stated that Pakistan is one of the deadliest countries in world, with attacks on journalists increasing day by day. He said the government seems to have failed in protecting the lives of journalists despite Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s announcements and promises.
Ehsand Ahmed Sehar strongly condemned the deaths of journalists Yaqoob Shehzad and Nadeem Haider within three days, as well as the arrest of Rehmat Shah Afridi, the Editor-in-Chief of the national English daily The Frontier Post in Lahore on October 7, 2014. The editor-in-chief was arrested by Civil Lines police on the report of his estranged son Jalil Khan Afridi.
The CJA deplores the violent deaths and arrest of the journalists, calling them tragic losses.
RMNP’s President has demanded the immediate release of Rehmat Shah Afridi and expressed his condolences with both slain journalists families. He also called on the government to immediately pay Rs one million as compensation to the heirs of both slain journalists, Yaqoob Shehzad and Nadeem Haider.
