Former Commonwealth Secretary-General Sir Don McKinnon (left) has been named as the Commonwealth’s Special Envoy to Maldives where controversy still rages over the removal of the former President.
Current Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamaleh Sharma said on 1 March that among McKinnon’s tasks would be to encourage an inclusive agreement between the past and present President and their supporters on the way forward, and to help introduce a Commonwealth technical programme to, among other things, strengthen the judiciary.
The arrest of a judge by the army under the former President was one of the events that sparked the unrest. Read the Commonwealth Secretariat Press Release here.
