SWEEPING VICTORY: India votes decisively for new premier, an ‘outsider’ known to speak his mind
INDIA is on the cusp of change — political, socio-economic and generational. The outcome of a contentious parliamentary election yesterday showed that the people had given a “decisive” mandate to a man widely perceived as “decisive”, ignoring his “divisive” past.
Voted to power in a tsunami that most observers failed to perceive was Narendra Modi, a Hindu “nationalist” from a backward community of oil crushers and a tea vendor when young, a complete outsider to New Delhi’s power elite that rules India, save his 13 years as chief minister of the money-friendly Gujarat state.
