The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), about to get underway in Colombo, Sri Lanka, will hear another call from the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative for a Commonwealth Commissioner for Human Rights.
“To say that hopes of real commitment to core values have been dashed would be to say too little,” says Maja Daruwala of the CHRI about progress on human rights in the past two years.
The CHRI newsletter makes the call as human rights in the Commonwealth continue to deteriorate, says Daruwala, who lists reports of troubling allegations and violations of fundamental freedoms.
